Our mission
What do my purchases fund?
Every purchase directly funds the shelter: feeding, caring for and finding homes for abandoned or neglected bunnies in Québec.
Can I donate to ALSA?
Absolutely. Donations are essential to our mission, and every contribution makes a difference.
DonateHow do I reach ALSA?
Write to [email protected] or use the contact page. We are a non-profit run mostly by volunteers: we reply as soon as we can.
Contact usAdoption
How does the adoption process work?
In four steps: browse our Facebook photo album to see available bunnies; pick one or more bunnies; come visit them; submit your adoption request. After evaluation, you confirm the adoption and pay.
Adoption processWhat are the adoption fees?
Spayed or neutered bunny, any age: $220 + taxes (male) or $245 + taxes (female), including a 3.5 kg box of hay and a starter bag of pellets. Spayed/neutered adult pair: $130 + taxes. Spayed/neutered pair aged 6 months or less: $330 + taxes. Add $60 + taxes per bunny vaccinated against hemorrhagic disease.
Are all ALSA bunnies spayed or neutered?
Yes, before joining their adoptive family. Spaying or neutering contributes to your bunny’s long-term health and reduces overpopulation.
Can I choose a specific bunny?
Yes. Read the profiles carefully and come visit. If you’re unsure, our volunteers will suggest bunnies based on your criteria: lifestyle, experience, children at home. Most of our bunnies live in foster homes, so we know their behaviour at home well.
Is a bunny a good choice for children?
They can fit in well, but bunnies are not toys: they need space, calm and respect, and don’t always tolerate being carried. Supervise interactions, especially at first.
How long does a domestic bunny live?
On average 8 to 12 years when well cared for. It’s a long-term commitment: veterinary care, proper nutrition and daily attention.
Can a bunny live in an apartment?
Absolutely, with enough space and at least 3 to 4 hours of freedom a day in a safe environment. Check your lease or building rules.
One bunny or a pair?
Bunnies are social and usually do better in pairs. Introducing two bunnies must be done gradually, though: ALSA can guide you.
What is a temporary foster family?
It houses a bunny rescued by ALSA until a permanent family is found: minimum 2-month commitment, veterinary costs covered by the shelter, at least 3 hours of freedom a day and a behaviour profile to fill in.

What should I feed a bunny?
Above all hay, ideally timothy, available at all times: 80 to 90% of their diet. Add fresh leafy vegetables and a limited amount of quality pellets. Carrots and fruit are treats to give in moderation.
Why is hay so important?
It keeps the digestive system active and naturally wears down the teeth, which grow continuously. A lack of hay can lead to serious health problems.
Why spay or neuter a bunny who lives alone?
In females, spaying greatly reduces the risk of uterine cancer. In males, neutering reduces aggression and marking. A fixed bunny is healthier and easier to live with.
How do I know if my bunny is sick?
Loss of appetite (especially refusing hay), fewer or no droppings, low energy, behaviour change, bloated belly: see a vet who treats exotic animals without delay. Bunnies can go downhill fast.
Do bunnies need a specialized vet?
Yes. Bunnies are considered exotic animals: find a clinic experienced with bunnies or small mammals. ALSA can point you to resources in your area.

Which brands do you carry?
Oxbow, Bunny Bum, The Bun Bun Family, No Furries Delights, Zoo-Max, Complètement Dingue, Hippity Hop, Hay Country (Rosewood) and several products developed directly by ALSA.
See the brandsWhat are ALSA products?
Products developed or selected by the shelter team based on our daily experience: timothy hay, litter, treats and accessories. Buying them directly supports the mission.
ALSA productsWhat is timothy hay?
Timothy hay is the hay recommended by most vets for adult bunnies: high in fibre, low in calcium and protein. Several formats and brands are available in the shop.
See the hayFirst or second cut?
First cut is more fibrous: excellent for wearing down teeth and stimulating digestion. Second cut is softer and more fragrant, ideal for picky or recovering bunnies. For a healthy adult, first cut is often better day to day.
Which pellets do you recommend?
Quality pellets made from pressed hay, without added seeds, nuts or dried fruit. Oxbow is very well regarded. Pellets are given in limited amounts and never replace hay.
See the pelletsWhich litter is recommended?
Wood-stove pellets: absorbent, inexpensive and safe if ingested. Avoid cedar or pine shavings (toxic), cat litter and corn litter.
See the litterWhat kinds of treats do you sell?
Natural treats: pressed-hay snacks, dried herbs, edible flowers, dehydrated fruit and more, all chosen with bunnies’ health in mind.
See the treatsWhy buy toys for my bunny?
Bunnies are curious and intelligent. Without enrichment they get bored and develop anxiety or destructive behaviours. Our toys encourage natural behaviours: digging, chewing, exploring.
